Lascia Ch'io Pianga

Lascia Ch'io Pianga is an ongoing body of work that I started in 2014. I combined traditional silver gelatin photographic prints with charcoal, ink, and various other mixed media techniques. All of these pieces were hand-crafted in traditional darkroom setting. I employed partial development; I used watercolor paint and charcoal to paint and draw on top of the prints; I scratched negatives, burned and crumbled prints; I overlaid physical objects on top of the silver paper during darkroom printing. The physical act, the materials used together with the original photographic image created meaning for each individual piece through the process of making.

"Lascia Ch'io Pianga" is an aria by baroque composer George Frederick Handel. This body of work was very much inspired by the melody and lyric of this aria.
